Revolutionary Allergy Research: Why Early Allergen Introduction Matters

Revolutionary Allergy Research: Why Early Allergen Introduction Matters

Written by: Jessica Kurosaki, Le Puree Dietitian

The Study

In 2015, a groundbreaking study found new evidence to show that early introduction of peanuts to babies could reduce the likelihood of peanut allergies by up to 81%.

Prior to this study, it was believed that delayed allergen introduction until after 12 months was safest- but this revolutionary information paved the way to show that delaying allergen introduction may be contributing to the high rates of allergies around the world.

In fact, the recommendations now are to introduce allergens with first foods (one at a time). If babies have no reactions to these foods, they should be kept in their diet approximately twice per week to reduce the likelihood of developing an allergy to this food. The main food allergens include cow’s milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, soy, wheat and sesame.

Le Puree Allergen Introduction

Our new ‘Allergen Exposure Range’ is aimed to do just this- to offer a way to introduce allergens in a safe and gentle way (with only one allergen per meal). They’re also there to keep this allergen in rotation of bub’s diet once they show no signs of a reaction. Our new ‘puree exposure range’ includes the following...

PB & Raspberry Puree

We’ve recreated that nostalgic flavour of peanut butter and jam (and of course the ‘jam’ is loaded with omega-3’s instead of sugar). This is delicious as a puree, but also fabulous as a spread on bananas, crackers or toast!

Tofu & Wakame Puree

Soy is an allergen found in tofu, which is why we’ve created the perfect blend of Japanese flavours to introduce this allergen. Tofu, wakame, carrots and mushrooms- the sophistication your bub is about to experience means they’ll be accompanying you to sushi restaurants in no time!

Tahini & Beetroot Puree

This puree is special. With the love and care given to roasting beetroot and cauliflower, mixed with the allergen of sesame from hulled tahini- this puree is finished off with a drizzle of olive oil. Are we at lunch with the girls, spreading a delicious dip on our Turkish bread, or are we introducing solids?

No boring meals. Not ever.

Our top 5 tips to introduce and sustain allergens in your little one’s diet:

  • Using these purees on a spoon in the first few months
  • Spreading these purees on steamed fruit or veggie sticks
  • Using them as a sandwich spread, ditching traditional dips for curated and thoughtful purees
  • Add a cube of the nut purees into bub’s porridge to cool it down, and mix it up!
  • Add a few cubes of tahini puree on your cheese boards at dinner parties (joking! Or are we??)

We hope these allergen purees help to make the introduction and continuation of allergens in bub’s diet that little bit easier!
